Out of the Blue celebrates the changing fortunes of the Lido over its lifetime and the determined but successful struggles to prevent its demolition. There are evocative photographs from every decade and memories of more than 70 users and observers. Local historian Peter Bradley has led in depth research together with a team from BLU to produce this comprehensive historical account of one of south London’s big success stories.

Through over 70 interviews with local people, archival research and photographs Out of the Blue tells the story of how the Lido came to be built and of the 70 eventful years which followed. It was written by Peter Bradley working with a team of 10 BLU members who helped with interviews. The project was funded by Awards for All.

…The ice cold water touched my toes
I took a deep breath
And my world changed

A vigorous and determined campaign by Brockwell Lido Users (BLU) saved Brockwell Park Lido, from demolition, halting a shameful process that has seen 50 of the capital’s 60 open air pools close over the post-war years. To celebrate its 70th birthday BLU ran poetry workshops by the pool for swimmers to write about water. Over 100 of these poems, mostly written and illustrated by children, are now published in a stunning collection, Waterwords.
